The Additive Manufacturing Institute (AMI) and the Cape Town Creative Academy (CTCA) maintain a close partnership, with AMI’s facilities integrated into CTCA’s campus. Together, we cultivate an environment where students gain hands-on experience and engage with industry clients and projects.
AMI, have been developing a commercial product line, collaborated with medical orthotist prosthetist Henk Craig, founder of the Orthocross Amputee Foundation. One of the primary objectives was to provide functional and expressive solutions for the foundation’s patients.
These covers serve a dual purpose. First, they restore missing volume, making them practical for wearing with trousers while minimizing unwanted attention. Second, they foster positive self-expression by allowing patients to showcase designs that reflect their personalities, shifting the narrative toward empowerment and confidence.
As part of a Makerslab initiative, our goal was to create more than just aesthetically pleasing objects, so to further enhance this project, we invited students to develop a range of designs that could be offered to the foundation’s patients upon completion of the development process.
